A gospel-compelled reaction

This week at Riverwood, we explored what it really means to be part of an ecclesial family. Not just attending on a Sunday out of habit, but living lives shaped by what was described as a “gospel-compelled reaction".

Using Ephesians 2 and 3 as a foundation, the talk reflected on the incredible grace God has shown us. We were reminded that none of us earn our place in God’s family. Salvation is a gift, given through mercy and love, and our response to that gift should naturally flow into the way we live, worship, serve, and care for one another.

A strong theme throughout the morning was community. The world is full of communities built around shared interests, hobbies, and lifestyles, but the ecclesia is called to be different. Jesus described his followers as a “city on a hill” and a visible light to the world. The challenge was clear: would people around us notice something distinct about the way we love, welcome, and support one another?

The first century believers were known for exactly that. Historians wrote about the remarkable way they cared for each other, even during persecution. Their faith wasn’t private or passive. It was visible in generosity, service, and genuine love.

There was also an important reminder that ecclesial life is not meant to become a “bunker mentality” where we simply retreat from the world and wait for Christ’s return. Instead, we are called to actively reflect God’s kingdom now through encouragement, hospitality, service, and sharing the hope of the gospel with others.

Several illustrations brought this idea to life. One compared the ecclesia to a magnificent cathedral, where no single brick stands out on its own, but together they create something beautiful. Another described Christ as the cornerstone, the reference point that keeps every part of our lives aligned. Without continually returning to him, it’s easy to become busy with spiritual activity while slowly drifting away from the character of Christ.

The talk finished with a simple but powerful challenge: commitment, contribution, and Christ-centred living. Every member of the ecclesia has a part to play. We are called to serve, to welcome, to invest in one another, and above all, to keep returning to Christ as our foundation and guide.

As we continue through the week ahead, it’s worth asking ourselves: are our lives just going through the motions, or are they truly a gospel-compelled reaction?
