Abiding Hope

The closing of the Wollongong ecclesia after many decades was deeply painful, yet it highlighted a central truth of the gospel. Buildings and arrangements may change, but God’s people are never without hope. As children of the Most High, our hope does not rest in places or structures, but in God’s promises.

Scripture shows that this experience is not unique. David often found himself displaced, hunted, and unable to worship as he wished. Yet wherever he was, he learned to anchor his trust in God. Psalm 42 captures this beautifully, as David speaks to his own soul and chooses hope over despair. His circumstances did not define his faith. His confidence in God did.

Jesus echoes this assurance when he speaks to the “little flock”, reminding believers that the Father delights to give them the kingdom. God wants us there. Salvation is not a reluctant offer, but a loving purpose fulfilled through His Son. Jesus was sent not to condemn the world, but to save it, and that saving work defines the hope we hold.

The New Testament describes this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. Like a sea anchor that stabilises a vessel in violent storms, hope grounded in God’s promises keeps believers steady when life overwhelms them. Careers, families, ecclesias, and health can all be shaken, but hope anchored in Christ holds fast.

Paul reminds us that we are saved in this hope, a confident expectation, not wishful thinking. It is the certainty that God’s kingdom will come, that death will be swallowed up in victory, and that mortal bodies will be transformed into immortality at Christ’s return. This is the hope that sustains us through loss and grief.

While we wait, we are called to abide in Christ. Remaining in him allows us to bear fruit as ambassadors of the coming kingdom. Strength does not come from ourselves, but from staying connected to the vine. Scripture nourishes this hope, encouraging us to endure and reminding us of God’s faithfulness.

God is the God of hope. Through His word and through Christ’s sacrifice, He fills us with joy, peace, and an overflowing confidence in what is to come. This is the hope we carry now, and the hope that will lead us into the kingdom that is surely coming.
