Stormy Winds Fulfilling His Word

Life often feels like being out at sea, sometimes overwhelmed by waves, other times simply battling through long, exhausting stretches. The account of Jesus walking on the water brings this reality into sharp focus.

The disciples were sent ahead into the boat, unaware they were heading straight into a storm. Yet this was no accident. The winds and waves were not random, but part of a greater purpose, revealing that even the stormy wind is under God’s control, fulfilling his word .

As the night wore on, the disciples strained against the wind, making little progress. Then, in the darkest hours, Jesus came to them, walking on the water. In the midst of chaos, he was completely in control. The waves seemed to yield before him, a powerful reminder that all creation is subject to God’s authority.

Peter’s response is both bold and deeply human. At Jesus’ command, he stepped out onto the water and began to walk. But when he felt the force of the wind, his focus shifted, and he began to sink. In that moment, he cried out, “Lord, save me,” and immediately Jesus reached out and caught him.

It was not a total loss of faith that caused Peter to sink, but a moment of hesitation, a wavering. And yet, even that was met with immediate grace. There is a lesson here for all of us. In the storms of life, whether overwhelming or just relentless, Christ is present, even when we cannot clearly see his footsteps. And when we begin to falter, the simplest and most powerful response is the same: “Lord, save me.” This is not only a cry in crisis, but a daily prayer. In moments of temptation, frustration, or weakness, turning to God in that instant can redirect our path and anchor us again in faith.

The disciples, witnessing this, declared, “Truly you are the Son of God.” Yet even then, their understanding was still growing. Like them, we too are learning, gradually coming to see more clearly who Christ is.

Ultimately, this account calls us to trust. Not in calm seas, but in the one who rules over them. And to recognise that through every storm, his hand is near, ready to save, strengthen, and lead us safely to our desired haven.
